NY Times Michael Pollan Article

Here's a good article in the New York Times Magazine from last Sunday by Michael Pollan on cooking shows and cooking in the U.S., and opens with a reminiscence of his mother and himself watching Julia Child on TV: http://tinyurl.com/lmplo4

  1. What a great depiction of Julia, 1960's family life, the evolution of cooking shows, and the changes at the family dinner table! It's so fascinating that Julia Child's heyday coincided with the rise of feminism. Betty Friedan is telling women they can "finally get out of the kitchen," and meaning that they can have a fulfilling and independent life. Meanwhile, Julia was telling women THE SAME THING - they have a right to have fun, it's ok to make mistakes, they can pride in their accomplishments, they should invest in high quality equipment for their endeavors, and that their contributions are valuable. Julia just framed everything in the context of cooking.
